The following ministrations are reserved exclusively to Bishops:

  • The blessing of Crucifixes for veneration
  • The blessing of an Antimension
  • The blessing of a Chalice and Paten
  • The blessing of a Monstrance or Ostensorium for exposition of the Blessed Sacrament
  • Reception of candidates into the Clerical state and Tonsuring*
  • The ordination of Porters, Lectors, Readers and Acolytes*
  • The ordination of Subdeacons, Deacons and Priests
  • The consecration of Altars, Churches and Cathedrals
  • The consecration of Bishops 

The following may be delegated to priests:
  • The Sacrament of Confirmation
  • The solemn blessing of a Sacred Image for veneration
  • The blessings of the sacred appurtenances or furnishings (sacra supellex) required in sacred worship e.g. vessels, utensils, vestments, linens, etc.
*Bishops-Elect and Major Religious Superiors e.g. Abbots, may perform these ceremonies by delegation
